Organizational Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Sub-Regional Office for Western Africa (SRO-WA) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), in Niamey, Niger. The Communications Officer reports to the Director of SRO-WA. The incumbent will assist the SRO-WA in the design and management of an internal communications strategy consistent with ECA corporate goals and priority areas and advise on communications and outreach activities of the office.For more information about ECA and its work, please visit us online at www.uneca.org.
Responsibilities
Under the overall guidance and direct supervision of the Director of SRO-WA, the incumbent of the post will be responsible for the following functions: 1. Assist in the design and management of an internal communication strategy consistent with ECA corporate goals and priority areas; 2. Gather ongoing information about the organization's work and results achieved to date, and document this information for broad internal and external dissemination; 3. Work with internal clients to assist dissemination of knowledge products and good practices to support country and regional policy development and project efforts; 4. Liaise with the Chief of the Information and Communication Section (ICS) to identify appropriate internal communications opportunities and mechanisms that highlight the ongoing work of the Sub-Regional Offices; 5. Liaise with communications focal points across the sub regions; 6. Prepare ongoing reports on the progress and impact of specific Sub Regional Office initiatives in collaboration with various communities of practice groups; 7. Provide ongoing sensitization sessions to Sub Regional Office staff on advocacy and communications as required; 8. Participate in management meetings in order to assist and advise on communications and outreach; 9. Organize media coverage both written, audio and video of major meetings of the sub regional offices; 10. Prepare research for and handle sensitive media inquiries; 11. Liaise with ECA web developers and Business Specialists to provide communications material to website/workspaces, and 12. Undertake any additional tasks that may be assigned by the Directors of the sub regional offices, such as editing, finalizing major speeches of the Director and report branding.
